Jury Information
Jury service is a civic responsibility and legal obligation for all citizens. The court may summon you for jury duty, which may include jury selection and serving as a juror in a trial.
Individuals selected for jury duty must meet certain eligibility requirements and time commitments.
DETERMINE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE:
- Be a U.S. Citizen
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a resident of Carroll County
- Not currently on the Grand Jury or a juror on another trial
WHEN YOU RECEIVE A SUMMONS:
- Courts will randomly select potential jurors from a pool of all eligible local residents.
- You will receive a notice - or jury summons - in the mail. The summons will include important information.
- Read the summons in its entirety and carefully. Follow ALL instructions given.
- Read through the list of legal excuses. If you wish to be excused or deferred, send a request to the email given. Legal excuses are listed below.
- If you fail to respond to your jury summons, you may be subject to a fine or other penalties.
APPEAR IN COURT:
- You must appear in person for jury selection at the date, time, and location noted on your jury summons. Bring a copy of your summons with you.
- Employers in Georgia are required to grant employees time off, though it may be unpaid, to serve jury duty.
- During jury selection, the court and lawyers may ask you a series of questions to determine if you could be a fair, honest and impartial juror for a trial.
NEXT STEPS:
- If you are selected to serve on a jury, you will receive information about the trial date. You are responsible for making yourself available for jury duty for the duration of the trial. Follow the instructions closely and contact the court with any questions.
- If you are not selected, the court will dismiss you and your obligation for this jury summons will be complete.
- People who are summoned for jury duty are eligible to receive nominal compensation for each day, including jury selection. Payment for Carroll County is $25.00.
LEGAL EXCUSES: Jury Affidavit for excusal/deferment
- 70 years or older
- Full Time Student (Class schedule required with credit hours included)
- Single Parent of child 6 and under with no alternative childcare (must include affidavit)
- Home School Parent (Must include Letter of Intent from Department of Education)
- Unpaid, Primary Caregiver for person over age of 6 (letter from patient's physician required)
- Active Military and/or Reserve Service Member (Military ID required)
- Traveling out of country or within the United States (documentation required)
- Non-Resident of Carroll County (documentation required)
- Not a U.S. Citizens (documentation required)
- Felony conviction without right being restored
- Person receiving summons is deceased
- Served jury duty within past 12 months
